Brussels, Belgium, 4 May 2026 – Daikin Europe has received BREEAM “Excellent” certification for its Research and Development Centre (EDC) in Ghent, Belgium, confirming the building’s high environmental performance and its alignment with one of Europe’s leading sustainability standards for non‑residential buildings.
Completed in 2024 and opened shortly thereafter, EDC Ghent serves as Daikin Europe’s R&D headquarters and a central hub for the development of next‑generation heating and cooling technologies. The building of 30,600 m² includes offices and large product and controls testing facilities. It was designed as a nearly zero‑energy building (nZEB), integrating advanced energy‑efficient systems and smart controls to minimise energy use and environmental impact.
It is a true real‑life demonstration of Daikin’s low‑carbon HVAC-R technologies, combining geothermal energy, air‑source systems, heat recovery ventilation, and a Building Management System that intelligently optimises energy flows while ensuring a comfortable working environment for the employees.
BREEAM certification goes well beyond energy performance, covering a wide range of criteria including indoor environmental quality, water management, and sustainable building management.
“Achieving BREEAM Excellent certification for the Daikin Europe Research and Development Centre in Ghent reinforces our ambitions behind the project,” says Wim De Schacht, Vice President Corporate Affairs and Service & Solutions Business at Daikin Europe. “EDC Ghent is a strategic pillar in Daikin’s global research and development network. It brings together European expertise, large‑scale testing capabilities, and innovation, while meeting ambitious standards for energy efficiency, occupant comfort, and sustainability. This certification reflects our focus on performance, efficiency and long‑term impact.”
