Ariccia, November 02, 2026 – The rapid growth of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning applications is reshaping data center infrastructure requirements, driving higher IT power densities and creating new thermal management challenges. To address these evolving needs, Daikin introduces its new Coolant Distribution Unit (CDU), available for order starting November 1, 2027. Specifically developed to support high-density AI applications, the new CDU is designed to enable thermal energy transfer between the Facility Water System (FWS) and the Technology Cooling System (TCS), supporting stable and reliable operating conditions in environments characterized by high thermal loads.
Product features
The new CDU range has been designed to provide a high degree of application flexibility, addressing the requirements of a wide variety of data center projects, both in new installations and retrofit applications. The units offer capacities ranging from 400 kilowatts to 2.5 megawatts per CDU and can be configured to support different TCS circuit management strategies. Through proprietary control logic, up to ten units can operate in parallel as a single integrated system, providing centralized control of circuit temperature and pressure. For larger-scale applications, the range also includes preassembled and engineered skid solutions featuring multiple CDUs integrated and configured for parallel operation. This approach can help simplify installation and commissioning activities while reducing on-site integration requirements. In addition, the use of standardized configurations may support project execution by facilitating procurement and coordination activities throughout the implementation process.
Reliability, serviceability and operational control
The new CDU has been designed to support the high availability requirements typically associated with modern data center environments. The system architecture incorporates features intended to enhance system resilience, including redundant pumps, duplicated pressure and temperature sensors, an integrated leak detection system, advanced alarm management functions and options supporting continuity of electrical supply. The hydraulic circuit is manufactured entirely from AISI 316L stainless steel and incorporates grooved mechanical couplings throughout, eliminating the need for welded joints. This design has been selected to provide corrosion resistance and to facilitate installation and maintenance activities throughout the equipment lifecycle. Particular attention has also been dedicated to serviceability. All units within the range are designed for front-side access only, reducing service clearance requirements. In addition, pumps can be removed using dedicated sliding rails designed to facilitate maintenance operations and support faster component replacement.
Daikin controller and group control logic
The CDU is equipped with a controller developed by Daikin for the coordinated management of multiple units operating within the same system. Through proprietary control logic, multiple CDUs can operate as an integrated solution, enabling centralized management of key operating parameters. To address the requirements of AI-oriented data centers, where thermal loads may vary rapidly, the CDU combines variable-speed pumps, high-accuracy flow, pressure and temperature measurements, and dynamic adjustment of TCS operating parameters. This control approach is designed to support stable operating conditions across a wide range of load profiles. A key element of the solution is a modulating valve dedicated to the FWS primary circuit, featuring an equal-percentage control characteristic and a high-speed actuator. The valve is designed to regulate thermal energy exchange between the FWS and TCS circuits and to support control of the TCS outlet temperature according to the configured operating parameters.
iDCM evolves from chilled water plant control to full data hall management
With the introduction of the new CDU, Daikin further expands its data center offering through the evolution of the iDCM (Intelligent Data Center Manager) platform, extending its scope beyond traditional chilled water plant control. The platform is designed to monitor and coordinate a broader range of equipment deployed within the Data Hall, including CDUs, CRAHs, AHUs and Fan Wall systems, providing operators with a centralized view of cooling infrastructure operating conditions. Through a single interface, iDCM enables visualization of temperatures, unit status and alarms in real time, while also providing access to selected operating parameters and supporting diagnostic and troubleshooting activities. The platform can also be integrated with existing Building Management Systems (BMS), facilitating coordinated management of the cooling infrastructure within the broader facility control environment.
