In high-traffic environments such as fitness centres, it is crucial to implement advanced technological solutions that guarantee climate comfort, energy efficiency and environmental sustainability. With the increasing emphasis on decarbonising heating systems and adhering to European sustainability regulations, there is a need for low-impact technologies that can reduce energy consumption without compromising performance.
In this context, air-to-water heat pumps are one of the most effective solutions for achieving high performance, energy savings and environmental responsibility.
Decarbonising heating in gyms using heat pumps
The EWYE-CZ air-to-water heat pump is a solution designed to meet the different demands of heating, cooling, and domestic hot water production. Featuring Daikin’s advanced inverter scroll technology, the unit ensures high energy efficiency by continuously modulating power output to match real-time system requirements. By utilizing R-454C refrigerant—known for its low environmental impact and full alignment with European sustainability standards—this solution stands out as an excellent choice for the decarbonisation of both residential and commercial heating systems.
One of this heat pump's key strengths is its ability to produce hot water at temperatures of up to 70°C, making it particularly well-suited to high-demand applications such as fitness centres.
This unit is available in 8 sizes from 19 kW to 70 kW, all equipped with Daikin inverter scroll compressors. The operating range allows water to be supplied from +20°C to +70°C, even in extreme environmental conditions such as the harsh Nordic winters or in summer when domestic hot water is still required. In addition, it can operate at high delta T values, allowing hot water to be delivered to different heating applications within the system. It can operate in ambient temperatures ranging from -25°C to 40°C.
Heat pumps and hot sanitary water production
The Daikin EWYE-CZ heat pump offers a high-performance solution tailored to meet the rigorous demands of domestic hot water production, consistently delivering temperatures up to +70°C. This capability is essential for maintaining hygiene standards and ensuring compliance with health and safety regulations. Additionally, the integrated anti-legionella control function for the external tank enhances water hygiene, providing a crucial safeguard for user well-being.
Why are heat pumps so advantageous compared to traditional systems?
Heat pumps offer a highly advantageous alternative to traditional heating systems, thanks to their exceptional energy efficiency. Unlike conventional technologies such as gas boilers or electric heaters, heat pumps can achieve a coefficient of performance (COP) of around 3, meaning they produce up to three times more thermal energy than the electricity they consume.1 This makes them way more energy-efficient than gas boilers, resulting in significantly lower energy costs and reduced CO₂ emissions, especially when powered by renewable energy sources. In addition to long-term economic savings, heat pumps are extremely versatile: a single system can provide heating, cooling, and domestic hot water, making them ideal for both new buildings and retrofit projects.
What ensures energy efficiency in Daikin units?
Thanks to its Full Inverter technology, the new Daikin EWYE-CZ high-temperature heat pump delivers exceptional performance, energy efficiency, and operational flexibility. At the heart of the system are Daikin’s inverter scroll compressors and inverter-driven fans, which work together to ensure optimal efficiency and low running costs. This combination makes the EWYE-CZ a fully inverter-driven unit, capable of precisely adapting to the building’s heating and cooling load profile. This adaptability is especially valuable during part-load conditions, which represent most of an HVAC system’s operating time, allowing the unit to maintain comfort while significantly reducing energy consumption and operational costs.
To further enhance system performance, the EWYE-CZ is designed to operate in a master/slave configuration, supporting up to four units connected in parallel on the same hydraulic circuit. In this setup, the master unit intelligently manages the operation of the slave units based on real-time system demands and external weather conditions. This coordinated control reduces energy waste, improves overall efficiency, and extends the lifespan of the equipment by balancing the workload.
Air-to-water heat pumps and compliance with F-Gas regulation
The Daikin EWYE-CZ heat pump range ensures full compliance with the latest EU F-Gas Regulation (EU) 2024/573 by operating with the low-GWP refrigerant R-454C. With a Global Warming Potential (GWP) of just 145.5, R-454C is well below the thresholds set by the updated regulation, which aims to phase down the use of high-GWP hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) and promote environmentally responsible alternatives. This makes the EWYE-CZ a future-proof and F-Gas-compliant solution that significantly reduces both direct and indirect CO₂ emissions, aligning with the EU’s climate goals. By using R-454C, the EWYE-CZ not only meets regulatory requirements but also supports sustainability-focused projects by lowering the overall carbon footprint. Its environmentally friendly profile makes it an ideal choice for applications where regulatory compliance, operational efficiency, and sustainability are top priorities.
Designed for space-constrained and noise sensitive installations
In many cases, fitness centres are located within residential or commercial buildings, where the available space for HVAC systems is often limited. To address this challenge, the Daikin EWYE-CZ heat pump is available in four compact versions, featuring one to four inline fans, all designed to ensure maximum efficiency with minimal footprint. The range also includes an integrated inverter water pump, which simplifies installation and further optimises space usage. Units are standardly equipped with a silent fan mode option, enabling users to configure specific time bands during which fan speed is reduced. This minimizes sound emissions, making it ideal for environments where nighttime quietness is essential.
Heating requirements in gym facilities
Fitness centres have several needs that require efficient and flexible solutions. It is essential to ensure environmental comfort for customers by maintaining a consistent and controlled temperature throughout the whole building. In addition, another relevant aspect is the production of domestic hot water, which is necessary for showers in the locker rooms and daily cleaning and sanitisation. The year-round availability of hot water is crucial for maintaining high hygiene and operational standards. Furthermore, many gyms may have wellness areas with saunas and Turkish baths, which require a continuous, reliable supply of hot water at high temperatures. Finally, the entire application must be designed to ensure energy efficiency and environmental sustainability by reducing energy consumption and environmental impact.
European quality manufacturing
The EWYE-CZ inverter heat pump is manufactured at the headquarters and heart of Daikin Applied Europe, located in Ariccia (Rome), Italy. This factory is dedicated to producing high-quality HVAC equipment, including two main types of heat pumps: air-source and water-source.
