Sustainable air conditioning retrofit completes hotel modernisation

Hotel St. Annen, Hamburg

Located in a quiet residential street in central Hamburg, the Hotel St Annen creates a warm and welcoming ambience for visitors in modern surroundings.

Built in 1962, the hotel has recently undergone extensive modernisation to the thirty two bedrooms and other hotel facilities. As part of the upgrade programme, the hotel was retrofitted in just three and a half weeks with an innovative future-proof air conditioning system that centres around individual room cooling, a feature now expected as standard by hotel guests.

The customer sought a sustainable low noise HVAC solution offering a high degree of comfort, reflecting the hotel’s service-focused ethos: “We are happy to be your quietly located home”.

The hotel opted for Daikin’s latest VRV 5 S-Series R-32 heat pump system. Conceived to meet both present and future needs, the VRV 5 S-Series enables guests to benefit from individually customisable air conditioning while offering the hotel an efficient and cost-effective solution based on renewable energy.

Hotel St Annen is one of the first hotels in Germany to be equipped with the new VRV 5 R-32 system, with a 68% lower greenhouse effect compared to the market standard. Delivering outstanding sustainability with improved energy efficiency over the entire system life cycle, R-32 requires a smaller refrigerant charge and is easy to recycle and reuse.

Visually unobtrusive and quietly discreet

The Hotel St Annen is located in a densely populated residential neighbourhood. This meant the requirements for sound-proofing were especially rigorous. Thanks to their compact size, at only 87 cm high, and low noise operation, the three outdoor single-fan units were able to be sited side by side on the roof, minimising visibility and disturbance.

Stylish air-conditioning, easy to retrofit

All thirty two guest rooms as well as the lobby and hotel breakfast room and bar, are fitted with slimline wall mounted units. The small refrigerant pipes and unobtrusive pipe shaft allows the interior units to be retrofitted without affecting the interior aesthetics.

Intuitive control in the rooms and central energy management

The award-winning, elegant Madoka wall controller, with intuitive touch control, makes it easy for guests to regulate room comfort.

Temperature and air flow can be adjusted by remote control to ensure a pleasant environment with even air distribution for maximum comfort. Whisper quiet operation allows guests to sleep undisturbed at night.

For the hotel staff, Daikin’s advanced Intelligent Touch Manager (iTM) enables centralised control and monitoring, allowing energy consumption to be optimised. Built-in cooling and overheating protection settings prevent room temperature falling below 16°C in winter or rising to over 32°C in summer.

Sustainable solution safely covers all spaces down to 10 m2 with full compliance

Daikin's VRV 5 solution is extremely flexible and could easily be fitted in the guest rooms with sizes between 10 and 27m2 thanks to the unique Shîrudo Technology.

In order to comply with IEC60335-2-40: Ed.6., specific safety requirements are needed for R-32 heat pump systems, especially for smaller room sizes.

With Daikin’s advanced Shîrudo technology, all the safety measures required to comply to the product standard have been factory integrated, removing the need for additional equipment or on-site customisation.

These measures include sensors which trigger a visual and acoustic alarm and an automatic refrigerant recovery to the outdoor unit, should a leak occur.

The Shirudo Technology in conjunction with the Xpress design software made system design easy, ensuring a faster completion with the flexibility to include a range of room sizes.
