Introducing Daikin's new plug-and-play and cost saving control system for HVAC plants

Brussels, 13 December 2024 - Daikin announces the release of its Smart Control System (SCS), a Daikin-developed control solution for managing hydronic plants including chillers, heat pumps, air handling units and fan coils. The solution was developed by Daikin and will be available in January 2025. SCS allows optimisation of working conditions of a whole HVAC system, focusing on comfort applications such as light commercial, offices, small and medium hotels.

Daikin SCS for HVAC plant optimal total lifecycle performance

SCS is the latest development of Daikin control solutions dedicated to management of hydronic HVAC plants, facilitating design, installation and operation. In contemporary HVAC plant design, it is essential to consider the performance of the plant throughout its entire lifetime to minimize CO2 emissions and operational costs. Daikin SCS facilitates this by ensuring optimal control of system units under all conditions, accommodating various plant configurations with minimal design and installation effort. The following points highlight the product-related advantages, resulting in significant benefits for designers, consultants, and end customers.

Optimising HVAC System Performance with SCS

The Smart Control System (SCS) employs unit sensors and controllers to optimise performance effectively. It utilises advanced optimisation logics to ensure the best working configuration for units, prioritising comfort, efficiency, and cost management in all conditions. Features such as Smart Defrosting and Advanced Staging algorithms contribute significantly to this optimisation. Additionally, SCS enhances system reliability by optimising unit operations, which extends the HVAC system's lifespan and reduces maintenance costs related to manpower and spare parts.

Comprehensive and Cost-Effective HVAC Control Solution

The Smart Control System (SCS) offers a plug-and-play installation, requiring only an external panel and a few sensors, with units connected via Modbus and leveraging primarily on built-in sensors. Available in three configurations (Light, Medium, Full), SCS adapts to various projects, optimising costs for small to medium-sized HVAC plants. As a turnkey solution, SCS simplifies the work for plant designers and consultants. Its smart system architecture is cost-effective compared to third-party control systems that need additional sensors. Additionally, the fast implementation of SCS can be done by a Daikin technician during commissioning, avoiding extra configuration costs for third-party systems.

Overview of the system

By means of SCS, a complete Daikin solution can be designed and supplied, including chillers, heat pumps, air handling units (AHUs) and fan coils. SCS is available as an external panel, to be connected to the units in the system via Modbus protocol.

Illustration with Daikin products managed by SCS through Modbus/RS485 communication

The above scheme describes a simplified architecture, where Daikin Products (heat pumps, AHUs, fan coils) are managed by SCS through Modbus/RS485 communication. That implies SCS is controlling and optimizing the entire system, including:

  • The common water outlet temperature sensor wired to the first chiller / heat pump
  • The pumps mounted on chillers
  • Eventual manifolded pumps

Control system configurations

Smart Control System is offered in three main configurations, allowing for scalability in hardware,
license and price. Each version can manage up to 4 chillers or heat pumps with a total cooling capacity of up to 500 kW and additional equipment as follows:

  1. Light (up 500 datapoints): up to 20 fan coil’s zones or 10 AHUs
  2. Medium (up 1250 datapoints): up to 70 fan coil’s zones, or 10 AHUs + 50 fan coils’ zones
  3. Full (up 2500 datapoints): up to 120 fan coil’s zones, or 10 AHUs + 100 fan coils’ zones

A fan coil zone can consist of up to 30 fan coils, managed via a dedicated controller, also developed and supplied by Daikin.

Product coverage

SCS is available to manage plants composed of the equipment as follows, offering flexibility to cover many different applications and installations.
